Plumes of smoke covered the Texas Tech University Recreational Center around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday after a manhole busted at the LP&L Brandon Power Station.
Around the same time, a gas leak in the Engineering Building prompted an immediate evacuation. All floors were evacuated by 7:45 p.m.
Flint Avenue and Main Street, in addition to roads surrounding the TTU Rec Center, are closed, and individuals are advised to avoid the area.
An individual near the Rec Center said a manhole steam issue from a nearby cooling plant may have caused the smoke eruptions.
Tech is also experiencing power outages as part of the greater Lubbock power issue, according to X, formerly known as twitter, post from the university.
