Strong winds cause damage and power outages in eastern Iowa


A batch of storms produced damage and knocked out power in eastern Iowa Friday evening.

A lack of moisture prevented storms from intensifying any stronger, but gusts of 60 to nearly 80 mph occurred in parts of eastern Iowa.

Here are the wind gust reports and damage from the storms and winds:

  • Central City Fire reports 10-12 foot tree came out of the ground
  • Central City: Tree over the road and power outages
  • Manchester: Power lines down
  • Shell Rock: Power out in town (has since been restored)
  • Wayland: Turkey house lost roof
  • Brighton: Lightning caused field fires
  • Cedar Rapids Airport: 79 mph gust
  • Washington: 78 mph gust
  • Washburn: 74 mph gust
  • Grundy Center: 71 mph gust
  • Manchester: 65 mph gust
  • Marengo: 65 mph gust
  • Gilbertville: 63 mph gust
  • Ainsworth: 62 mph gust
  • Lowden: 60 mph gust
  • Alburnett: 56 mph gust
