TOLEDO, Ohio — Republican governor candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has sparked conversation with a suggestion to rename Lake Erie as “Lake Ohio.”
During a campaign event in Toledo, Ramaswamy said, “There’s a Lake Michigan, so there should be a Lake Ohio.”
Ramaswamy’s press team sent ABC 6 News a statement Tuesday afternoon saying “This was just a joke, and the audience understood it as such.”
Ramaswamy did say during the Toledo event on Monday that he’d like to discuss the topic further.
His Republican opponent for the GOP nomination, Attorney General Dave Yost, responded by noting that Lake Erie is mentioned in the state constitution, and the governor does not have the authority to change the name.
