For the first time, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway NCAA men’s basketball tournament contest has a $1 million winner (or winners), according to a report from Front Office Sports.
For a decade, the billionaire has run an employee contest for Berkshire Hathaway employees, which typically gets between 60,000 and 70,000 entries.
For years, the prize would be $1 million every year for life for anyone who perfectly predicts the Sweet 16, with a $100,000 consolation prize for the person whose bracket stayed perfect the longest. The jackpot had never previously been won.
This year, however, the 94-year-old Buffett tweaked the rules, saying he’d give $1 million to anyone who correctly picks at least 30 of the first 32 games.
According to the FOS report, an update was sent to pool participants following Friday night’s games saying “We have our first ever confirmed award of The Prize.”
So, one person, or multiple Berkshire employees, are $1 million richer. Berkshire plans to announce the identity of the winner (or winners) Monday.
