Matt Moore on Saturday was informed he did not make the Red Sox’s initial active roster for the 2025 regular season.
However, the veteran left-hander won’t be leaving the organization.
Moore, who signed a minor-league deal with Boston in late February, had an opt-out decision to make after he was not included in Alex Cora’s Opening Day pitching staff. The 2013 All-Star on Sunday informed reporters of the verdict: He will head to Triple-A Worcester instead of cutting ties with the Red Sox altogether and hitting free agency, per WEEI’s Rob Bradford.
The 35-year-old choosing to stay with Boston wasn’t terribly surprising. He spoke very highly of the franchise upon signing his minor-league pact and appreciated the club’s vision for him. Teams also never can have enough pitching depth, so there’s always a chance Moore could make a big-league impact for the Red Sox at some point this season.
But for now, the 15th-year pro will focus on keeping himself sharp in the minors.
