PORTLAND, Maine (WABI/WMTW) – Maine State Police say traffic is flowing again after a fatal crash Friday morning led to a full shut down of traffic on the I-295 between mile markers 3 and 4.
Officials say the crash happened near the toll booth in Scarborough after a vehicle was driving in the wrong direction and collided head-on with a tractor trailer.
Police say the driver of the wrong-way vehicle was 86-year-old George Vandenburgh of Portland.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Authorities say the driver of the tractor trailer was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Both the southbound and northbound lanes were blocked to traffic in the area for hours causing significant delays and detours, according to our media partner, WMTW.
The crash remains under investigation.
