RIDGEWAY, Va. – Hendrick Motorsports’ Corey Day will take his biggest step yet at one of NASCAR’s smallest venues.
Day will make his Xfinity Series debut on Saturday afternoon at Martinsville Speedway, a 0.526-mile short track in Virginia. The race is set for 4:30 p.m.
But first, Day participated in practice and qualifying from the paperclip on Friday afternoon. And after running some rehearsal laps, the 19-year-old went out and turned in a lap of 20.189 seconds. That was good enough for the eighth starting spot.
“That thing is a lot of fun,” Day said after practice. “It’s got a lot of power and low downforce and a guy with my background, I love that.”
Saturday’s race will be the second in a tripleheader this weekend, all culminating in Sunday’s Cup Series race, set for 3 p.m. Hendrick Motorsports has won the last three spring races in the premier series.
