The Fruitport Community Schools Superintendent said the strong winds blew off the gym’s roof. Beach Elementary School is closed on Monday for cleanup.
MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — Beach Elementary School will be closed Monday due to storm damage.
A strong line of severe weather rolled through West Michigan late Sunday afternoon into the early evening, triggering severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings. Those have since expired.
Fruitport Community Schools Superintendent Jason Kennedy on Sunday said Beach Elementary School suffered “significant storm-related damage.”
The school’s roof to the gym was blown off and has significant flooding as well, he said.
At this point, school for the rest of the district will go on as normal, Kennedy said.
“However, please know that this could change as we proceed throughout the evening hours and assess conditions at each of our buildings,” he said in a note home to parents. “The closure at Beach may extend beyond tomorrow as our team and contractors work to mitigate the damage.”
